Airlines tapping into IoT

Air travel has been evolving as time goes by, improving the ways we travel, security and now in the next three years, passenger experience will change a lot thanks to IoT (Internet of Things). In 2015, a survey amongst 200 top airlines was released by SITA and resulted that 86% of airlines expect IoT to deliver benefits to travellers and 37% already allocated funding for it.

Thanks to IoT, Check-in,Bag Drop and Bag collection will be easier and will have a peace of mind compared to today. As part of this revolution, many things at Airport including buildings, equipment, bags, trolleys ect are equipped to transmit a status. 83% nowadays carry smart phones and can be a part of IoT.

One top upgrade is baggage beacons to reduce lost luggage. This would be used to tag owner credentials and make lost luggage easily to be recovered. IoT will enable you to check your luggage anytime and anywhere.

By 2020, 25 – 50 billion devices will be connected together to be used forecasted by Cisco. Thanks to IPv6, IoT nodes will be allowed to be connected on the internet. Wireless proximity sensors like, low energy bluetooth beacons, RF ID and near-field communication devices too, will be connected. Google recently announced Brillo, an Operating System for IoT devices, and Weave, a cross-platform common language that will let devices communicate together locally and via the cloud.

One great things about this is that in the future, personal robots like Musio can also help check baggage, airline and check-in status while travelling.
